MTO Goals: Minimum Target Outrageous Goal Planning

Years ago I learned this new high-level goal framework called MTO Goals. It took the BHAG concept and really broke it down.

MTO stands for minimum, target, and outrageous goals. Developed by Raymond Aaron, this technique really works for me as it takes a goal and allows you to set a realistic, hopeful, and Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) target that no matter what if you hit the minimum you are happy and if you knock it out of the park and hit the outrageous goal you are thrilled!

He defines each as:

Minimum is defined as “what you can be counted on to achieve based on your past performance”. Not on your hopes. But on the reality of your actual past achievements.

Target is the “stretch”, that which is slightly beyond what you know you can accomplish.

Outrageous has an unusual definition: “what you know you cannot achieve”.

The Best Goal-Achievement Strategy

Binary [Goals] - you achieve it or you don’t achieve it.

If you achieve it, you feel good. If you don’t achieve it, you feel bad.

Why would you want to set up a system that gives you some reasonable probability of failure and feeling bad?
